Cicero: On Invention. The Best Kind of Orator. Topics. A. Rhetorical Treatises (Loeb Classical Library Np. 386)

Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106?43 BCE), Roman lawyer, orator, politician and philosopher, of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In the fourteenth century Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man all the more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero is in twenty-nine volumes.

Cicero: Brutus, Orator; Volume V (Loeb Classical Library No. 342)
$24.00
Free P & P  from
Amazon

Brutus gives an account of the Roman tradition of public and lawcourt speeches from its beginning to what Cicero described as the polished and entertaining speeches of his own day. Along the way Cicero has interesting things to say about the influence of the speaker's audience on his style and technique. Also notable here is an autobiographical sketch.

Cicero's own very wide practical experience informs Orator, which depicts the ideal speaker. Here he details the principles of eloquent oratory and quotes instructive examples. Both works date from 46 BCE and are dedicated to the author's promising young friend, Brutus, later famous in the conspiracy against Caesar.

Textbooks.com

Contains Cicero?s De Oratore and Brutus, influential sources over the centuries for ideas on rhetoric and train?ing for public leadership.

?

The De Oratore, written in 55 B.C., argues that rhetoric is socially significant because states are established and main?tained through the leadership of eloquent men.

?

The three books of dialogues in this volume feature discussions between well-known figures in Roman history, in?cluding Lucius Crassus, Marcus An?tonius, Quintus Lutatius Catulus, Quin?tus Marcius Scaevola, Caius Aurelius Cotta, Julius Caesar Strabo Vopicus, and Publius Sulpicus Rufus.

?

The Brutus continues the theme of the dialogues, giving a history of eminent orators whose performances exemplify the Ciceronian theory that rhetoric final?ly adds up to leadership.

"[A]n eminently readable text, done clearly and accurately... it gives as good an idea as a translation can of the complexity and subtlety of Chr?tien's originals.... [T]his translation should attract a wide audience of students and Arthurian enthusiasts." -- Speculum

"[A] significant contribution to the field of medieval studies [and] a pleasure to read." -- Library Journal

"These are, above all, stories of courtly love and of knights tested in their devotion to chivalric ideals (with passion and duty often at odds); but they are also thrilling wonder stories of giants, wild men, tame lions, razor-sharp bridges and visits to the Other World." -- Washington Post Book World

"This tastefully produced book will be the standard general translation for many years to come." -- Choice

"... an excellent rendering of the texts... an eminently readable text, done clearly and accurately in an English style that presents few infelicities and that is just slightly more formal than that of Kibler's... it gives as good an idea as a translation can of the complexity and subtlety of Chretien's originals... The text is provided by a translator who understands the spirit as well as the letter of the original and renders it with style... this translation should attract a wide audience of students and Arthurian enthusiasts... The Genius of John Ruskin: Selections from His Writings (Victorian Literature and Culture Series)

Textbooks.com

No figure among the Victorians surpasses John Ruskin in magnitude of genius, modernity of message, or mastery of prose. Yet for the first half-century after his death in 1900, his genius lay largely undiscovered. First published in 1963, John D. Rosenberg's The Genius of John Ruskin aimed to make Ruskin's ideas and writings accessible to the modern reader, and it quickly became a classic. Long out of print, this important anthology is now available with a new foreword by Herbert F. Tucker and an expanded and updated bibliography by the author that takes into account recent Ruskin scholarship.
